PHARMAQ Analytiq offers diagnostics and disease analyses for a wide selection of fish species. Learn more about our services here


Originally, PHARMAQ Analytiq specialized in cold water species, such as salmon, rainbow trout and halibut. However, as we are a global company, we have now expanded our diagnostics services to include a selection of temperate water species, mainly tilapia, sea bass and sea bream.

The Importance of Local Expertise in Fish Diagnostics

Diseases vary with geography and fish species, and PHARMAQ utilize local knowledge and expertise in order to properly identify which details are relevant at any given time. Currently, PHARMAQ Analytiq has local representatives in all the major salmon markets in the world: Norway, Chile, Canada and the UK/Ireland. As we have expanded our service to include new species, we now also have representatives in the Mediterranean countries, Latin America, China and Brazil.


When it comes to preventative fish health, the salmon is the species in which PHARMAQ Analytiq has the strongest expertise. Salmon is farmed most frequently in Norway, the UK, Chile and on both Canadian coasts. There are numerous viral and bacterial diseases that can affect salmonids and PHARMAQ Analytiq offers qPCR analyses for all the main infectious diseases (link).


During the last 5 years, lumpfish has become the second most farmed fish in Norway, with production hovering around 50 million fish annually. Lumpfish (and some wrasse species) are used as cleaner fish, i.e. they are released into the salmon pens and pick lice off the salmon. The main disease problems in lumpfish (and wrasse) are caused by bacteria. PHARMAQ Analytiq offers qPCR analyses for the main bacterial diseases of cleaner fish and are the sole providers of analyses for lumpfish viral diseases, including Lumpfish Flavivirus. Our experienced histopathology team helps investigation of challenging disease problems in cleaner fish.


Tilapia are bred all over the world. However, the countries that produce the largest volume of Tilapia are China, Indonesia, Egypt, Brazil and several of the Latin American countries. In this species, bacterial infections caused by different varieties of Streptococcus, Francisella, Aeromonas, Flavobacteriae, and Edwardsiella are common. Moreover, tilapia can also be subject to viruses such as the Irido Virus and Tilapia Lake Virus.

Sea bass, Sea bream

Today, sea bass and sea bream are farmed mostly in the Mediterranean, with the majority of these animals being farmed in Turkey, Greece and Spain. Here, the disease challenges are mostly related to parasites, but we also detect bacterial diseases caused by different Vibrio, Aeromonas and Photobacterium species. Among the viral diseases, the main problem is infection with Nodavirus.

Zebrafish and Other Laboratory Fish Species

PHARMAQ Analytiq also provides diagnostics and monitoring of zebrafish and other species of laboratory fish. Reliable research on zebrafish and other laboratory fish species requires the use of healthy, disease free populations. Aquatic pathogens can spread quickly through zebrafish facilities and early diagnosis is imperative for protecting research and valuable genetic stocks. We offer both histopathological examinations and screening with molecular biological tools to ensure that the fish that are being used in experiments are of high quality.
